The England midfielder Needs to Drop the Petulance to Reclaim a Key Role Under Manager Thomas Tuchel.

Should Bellingham wants to earn his place back into England’s strongest starting eleven, he would be wise to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted after noticing that he was being shown after an evening of mixed performance in the match against Albania was not good enough.

"I prefer not to blow it out of proportion but I stand by my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the teammates who come in," stated Tuchel. "Choices are taken and you need to comply as a player."

Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for an outburst. The captain had recently scored to make England 2-0 up in an inconsequential fixture, the game had six minutes to go and he, after a below-par performance, had just been booked for fouling an opponent. This could scarcely be called a debatable decision. In fact it might have been reckless for the manager to not substitute him given that it was possible the midfielder would make himself ineligible of the first match of the tournament by receiving a another booking.

Turning the Spotlight to Himself

But Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s annoyance as he realized that he would be substituted for Morgan Rogers. His arms went up in exasperation and while he exchanged a handshake after making his way to the sideline there was no doubt that the manager was not impressed.

This is the challenge that Bellingham must overcome. He praised Marcus Rashford for providing the assist for Harry Kane to score his second goal, but the rest was counterproductive. It is not as if protesting was going to reverse the substitution. The German has talked so much about following squad protocols and the necessity of behaving correctly.

In the Spotlight

The midfielder, omitted from last month’s squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the squad recently. In effect he has been on trial and his actions haven't benefited him by reacting to coming off the pitch as England wrapped up a flawless qualification run by seeing off a spirited effort from their opponents.

Tactics and Formation

It means it's unclear on how the squad function at their best including Bellingham. The performance was not definitive. There was experimentation from the manager early on. He has provided England organization and direction in recent months, using a defensive midfielder, a No 8, an attacking midfielder and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different against Albania. Quansah was made his England debut, Adam Wharton started for the first time for England and the use of the defender as an auxiliary midfielder gave a similar look to City's 2023 treble winners.

Mixed Performance

Bellingham was a mixed bag. He created an opportunity for his teammate in the latter period but often looked trying too hard. Several hurried and errant passes. An unnecessary confrontation with a rival player in the early stages. England were ragged for much of the second half. One Albania chance resulted from Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking occurred when he lost the ball from Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.

Substitutes Decide

Ultimately England’s depth was decisive. The coach brought on Phil Foden, who seemed more naturally fitted to the spot that Bellingham had played in the opening period, and Saka. Later Saka delivered a set-piece for the captain to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that corners and free-kicks will be crucial next summer.

Connection Remains

Still, though, Bellingham was the story. The excellence of Rashford's cross for Kane’s header was a little lost amid the drama of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, all eyes were on him. Tuchel walked up from behind and directed Bellingham in the direction of the away supporters. Their connection is not broken. The coach isn't ready to discard Bellingham yet. However, whether Tuchel is inclined to give him the central position is still uncertain.
