At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a police operation against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. In excess of 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations erupted when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials stated.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.
Local authorities said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
